About the Funds
The Los Alamos Employees’ Scholarship Fund
In 1998, Los Alamos National Laboratory and its employees, retirees, and contractors partnered with the LANL Foundation to create the
Los Alamos Employees’ Scholarship Fund (LAESF). The Fund’s goal is to provide scholarships that support the students of Northern New Mexico
who are pursuing undergraduate degrees in fields that will serve the region. Awards are based on academic performance (academic rigor, GPA,
and standardized test scores), leadership potential (extracurricular and community service activities), critical thinking skills, and career
goals (relevant to LANL or local community needs). Financial need, diversity, and regional representation are integral components of the
selections process.
The Los Alamos Employees’ Endowed Scholarship Fund
The Los Alamos Employees’ Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 1999 to create lasting scholarship opportunities for Northern New
Mexico students. The goal of the Endowed Scholarship Fund is to increase the number of scholarships available each year, while ensuring
permanent funding.
The Endowed Leadership Scholarship Fund
Former Laboratory Director John Browne and his wife Marti established the Endowed Leadership Scholarship Fund in 2000. The goal of this
scholarship fund is to create lasting scholarship opportunities for Northern New Mexico students who have demonstrated outstanding
leadership qualities and achievements in their home, school, or community.
The Regional College Scholarship Fund
In recognition of the dramatic need faced by students attending regional colleges, the LANL Foundation began collecting donations in
2006 to establish a scholarship for this often under-served group. The same eligibility requirements apply for regional college applicants
(3.25 GPA; 19 ACT or better for freshman applicants), but students must also attend New Mexico Highlands University, Luna Community College,
Santa Fe Community College, UNM-LA, UNM-Taos, or Northern New Mexico College.
The LANL Retirees’ Endowed Scholarship Fund
The LANL Retirees’ Endowed Scholarship Fund was created to give LANL and contractor retirees the opportunity to provide scholarships to students pursuing degrees in areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Emphasis is placed on students with demonstrated financial need. All are welcome to contribute to this fund.
The Senator Pete Domenici Endowed Scholarship Fund
Senator Pete Domenici has made immense contributions to the Los Alamos National Laboratory, the LANL Foundation, and the communities of Northern New
Mexico. To honor Senator Domenici for these contributions, the LANL Foundation is establishing the Senator Pete Domenici Endowed Scholarship Fund. In
“Pete’s spirit,” the fund is dedicated to providing college scholarships to local high school seniors who demonstrate outstanding leadership in their
schools and communities and who exhibit academic excellence. The scholarships, one for each of the seven counties the LANL Foundation serves, will help
to foster the competitiveness of New Mexico’s workforce in an increasingly complex global economy.
In 1997, the LANL Foundation was established “to enhance the vitality of Northern New Mexico by investing in education,
learning, and community development.” In the ensuing years, Senator Domenici played a leadership role in obtaining a $35 million appropriation for the
LANL Foundation’s endowment. That endowment has now grown to more than $68 million and has helped to fund educational enrichment programs in Northern
New Mexico public schools.
UC Nonresident Fee Scholarship
Los Alamos National Security (LANS), LLC in conjunction with the University of California (UC) has set up a scholarship fund for outstanding students from Northern New Mexico. These scholarships assist students who are admitted to one of the UC campuses and are required to pay out-of-state tuition in addition to in-state fees. Priority will be given to students from low-income families who are the first generation to attend college, and who don’t already qualify for a UC nonresident fee waiver under any other program or agreement. (Students whose parent[s] are employed full time by UC or LANS are already covered and do not qualify.) No specific academic field of study is required. Scholarships are available for up to four years, with the maximum award being the full nonresident fee waiver.
